Poker seems to be the biggest thing since white bread these
days. In what seems like a recognizable part of
society and culture, poker has infiltrated the daily lives
of many people largely through television and mainstream
media. Most people have seen at least parts of poker
tournaments on the giant cable networks like the Travel
Channel and ESPN - both of which televise million dollar
tournaments throughout the year.
And now that it
has become such a popular pastime, if you will, poker is
blowing up on the internet, for the masses who are getting
so excited watching it on the T.V. want to try it out for
themselves - and what better way than from the comfort of
your own home. If you are new to playing poker, it is
largely a game of chance. And although strategy is a
big factor when playing, if you are dealt the right cards,
you can't go wrong.
Poker consists
of a series of betting rounds broken up by card drawings, in
which the dealer places community cards in the center of the
poker table. Players can fold their hands at any time
(which is actually the key to smart playing), and are
eligible to win the pool of wages if they stay in through
all betting rounds (usually no more than five, depending on
the type of poker game). Texas Holdem, Omaha, and
Seven-card stud are the most popular game, with Texas Holdem
being the most popular by far.
Remember, the
key to playing poker successfully is good money management
skills, folding early on in the game even if your hand is
semi-good, good bluffing technique, and of course - a
penchant for attracting good luck. There are some
validated poker strategies out there that will help you to
make decisions on when to stay in the game and when to fold,
based on your own hand and what is showing in the community
cards.
